A Doula/Professional Birth Partner is trained to accompany a woman (& her partner) through pregnancy, childbirth and the first few weeks of family life.
A doula does not offer any clinical or medical expertise. Her sole function is to give ongoing emotional and physical support and to assist communication between the woman, her partner (if present) and other professionals.
Studies show that emotional, physical & informational support provided by a doula can reduce the need for pain medications, reduce the caesarean rate & may even shorten labour (see Klaus, Kennell & Klaus, Mothering the Mother, 1993).
My services as a birth doula include 2 x (2hr) visits during pregnancy to talk through your needs & wishes for your labour, birth & first few weeks with your new baby, or, alternatively you can attend one of my Active Birth Workshops for all of your information and practical details and I will come to meet you more informally before the birth so that I can get to know your birthing preferences.
I will be on standby for your labour from 38 weeks of your pregnancy onwards, you will be able to contact me by phone or email should you need to discuss anything.
I will remain with you throughout your labour & birth.
1 visit postnatally to talk through the birthing experience.
